VIDEO 2. Carol Read: Ideas for using flashcards

In this video, Carol Read explains how to use flashcards with children for teaching vocabulary. She tells us some activities we can use:
1.     FLASH: it consists on showing the flashcard so fast and children have to identify what’s on the flashcard and say the word.
2.     SLOWLY, SLOWLY: it consists on covering the flashcard and slowly show the picture. As soon as children recognize the picture they have to say the word.
3.     WHAT’S MISSING?: It consists on sticking the flashcards on the board and the children have to repeat the words. Then we remove one and ask the children to say what’s missing. It’s like a memory game.
4.     MAGIC EYES: It consists on sticking the flashcards on the board (6) and the children have to repeat the words in a rhythmic way. Then we go removing the flashcards one by one until we have none on the board.
5.     LIP READING: It consists on sticking the flashcards on the board and we say the word with the lip without sound. The have to guess the word we are saying.
6.     FLASHCARDS RIDDLES: It consists on describing the word and the children have to guess what’s the word.
7.     FLASHCARD GROUPS: It consist on dividing the class into groups. Give each group a flashcard and say actions that have to do each group naming it as the flashcard they have.
8.     HANDS ON HEADS: It consists on dividing the class into two groups. Assign some flashcard for each group. When the children listen to a word from their word, they have to respond by touching the head with their hands.
9.     FLASHCARD CHAIN: It consists on making the children sit in circle. We give them flashcards and they have to ask the classmate if they like or not the animal.
10.   KIM’S GAME: It consists on sticking some flashcards on the board. Let children remember the words, then remove the flashcard. Ask the children to write down all the words they remember with a partner. At last, correct it and you can ask them to classify the words.

After watching the video, I realise the importance of using flashcards as a resource of teaching. Also, I believe the activities are fun and they can engage the students.
